Daily Step – Reclaiming Joy

Along the journey towards the greater, there are many small, daily steps to better understand oneself, God, and others. This is one of my “daily steps”.

What would my life be like if I could grab hold of the joy (and confidence) I experienced as a child?

My oldest has been talking non-stop about this Christmas play he’s a part of this week in school. It all started with him asking me if I knew the song “Go Tell It On the Mountain” and then singing it for me to remind me of the words and tune. His conversation about the play and his excitement for it continued daily – and today, the day of the performances, he woke up chattering about what everyone person is doing in the play and the dance moves and the songs. I even got the privilege of him demoing a little (which he normally insists I can’t see anything he does until the appointed time – so this is big!) Just before I dropped him off at school he said with no hesitation: “Can’t wait for you to come see my dance moves. They are just so awesome.”

Confidence. Joy.

I want to grab hold of these two things for him and hold them close to his heart so they never fade away.

In my #advent guide for week 3 (still available, link in my bio), I mention this quote from #henrinouwen on #joy: “Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every single day.”

Maybe it’s the same with #confidence, we wake up and we choose to be confident today. We wake up and we choose joy. And we do it again and again until it becomes as free and easy as it was when we were children.

How can you choose joy or confidence today?
