Along the journey towards the greater, there are many small, daily steps to better understand oneself, God, and others. This is one of my “daily steps”.
Once along this same path going the other direction after church, I had three tired little people who didn’t want to walk. They were 2, 2, and 4. So, innocent mommy challenged them to a fast walk race to the car. I figured that two year olds couldn’t really go very fast. ⠀
⠀
I forgot about the speed of a four year old, however.⠀
⠀
He broke into a full out run. He was laughing and running free. He looked over his shoulder a couple times smiling and laughing as I shouted for him to stop. He didn’t. Not at the bridge, not at the steps at the end of the bridge. When he reached the step before the parking lot, he turned to smile again as I screamed for him to stop. ⠀
⠀
Luckily someone grabbed him as he darted across the parking lot. He was confused and screaming and kicking for the man to let him go. His joy was suddenly deflated when he saw my face and he cried hard.⠀
⠀
I never knew then that he just didn’t hear me call his name.⠀
⠀
I remember that day vividly, but this morning I remember more the wild, free, excited look as he giggled and darted away from me – filled with so much #joy as he felt the wind on his face. Before the confusion and the fear and the crying on both our parts – there was a glimpse of heaven.⠀
⠀
#ThomasMerton once said “There are days when I am convinced that Heaven starts already, now, in this ordinary life just as it is, in all its incompleteness, yet, this is where Heaven starts.. see within yourself, if you can find it. I walked through the field in front of the house, lots of swallows flying, everywhere! Some very near me..it was magical. We are already one, yet we know it not.”⠀
⠀
Life turns on a dime – happy to sad to happy again… but we can, if we really concentrate, capture those moments of #heavenonearth and use them as our guideposts.⠀
⠀
As you go through today, tell me… where did you see a glimpse of heaven?⠀
