Daily Step – What small steps of love can you take today?

“When we look back after many small steps of love, we will discover that we have made a long and beautiful journey.”

This Monday, I started putting little notes in my twins lunches on a whim.

They are not very creative. They are sketched roughly on an index card with a terribly drawn picture that apparently doesn’t always look like what I intended.

And they are so corny.

Like on one yesterday, my tired morning brain wrote:

Knock, knock

Who’s there?

Orange.

Orange who.

Orange you glad I love you.

Then I drew a really bad rendition of an orange.

I always hesitated to put notes in my boys lunches for a couple reasons. The first was that I was afraid once I started, I wouldn’t keep up with it. I didn’t want them to start anticipating something that suddenly wasn’t there. The second was that I felt it had to be perfect. It had to be as creative as the moms I’ve seen leave notes in the past.

There was one high schooler’s mom years ago that put an actual word puzzle in his lunch that he and his friends or teachers could work out together. She did this for like every day of his academic career. Impressive, right?

I mean it’s certainly a whole lot better than that orange (which could also have been a basketball or a ballon) I offered yesterday.

Despite my hesitations, on Monday, I decided to try something new… one small act of love.

I decided to try it without knowing for sure how long I’ll keep it up.

I decided to try it without knowing for sure how creative or original any of them would actually be.

Henri Nouwen wrote that we choose love by taking the small steps. The little things that offer light in the darkness.

What are the little steps of love you can take today?

How can you be the light that guides?
