Daily Step – Are you willing to do what love requires?

Share

Love is the solution.

The only solution.

According to Dorothy Day.

Wise lady! (She’s inching closer to sainthood as we speak, by the way)

But oh it can be so hard sometimes, can’t it?

It’s easy to believe I love others.

It’s even easy to proclaim that belief out loud. But that’s not really enough, is it?

The challenge of love comes when I have to go beyond believing and proclaiming to showing. Acting towards others in love even in the most challenging circumstances – that’s the harder part.

That is what Dorothy Day speaks of.

That is what the birth of Christ at the end of this week demonstrates.

The action part of love.

Dorothy Day goes onto say:

“If we love each other enough,

we will bear with each other’s faults and burdens. If we love enough, we are going to light a fire in the hearts of others. And it is love that will burn out the sins and hatreds that sadden us. It is love that will make us want to do great things for each other. No sacrifice and no suffering will then seem too much.”

It is love that will make us DO great things for each other.

So the question for me today, and maybe it resonates for you as well, is:

How can I actively show love today?

Am I willing to do what love requires?
